Matters of Life and Death
While we were waiting to meet up with some old/new friends (Nadine's college friend Joanne and her family of 5) at Heritage Park in Sandwich, we wandered over to a cemetery site on the grounds. This memorial was rich fodder for young inquisitive minds. Sam walked from tombstone to tombstone thanking the soldiers who had given their lives to protect our country. Morgan asked "Do the little stones mean their death was a little deal, and the big stones mean their death was a big deal?" A pretty big question for a little girl. Jack wanted to know how far beneath us the bodies were? Sam wondered how much each of the varying size stones cost and set about calculating how much a "family" of stones would cost. He asked how big my stone would be and decided he would choose a "medium" size stone. Morgan lamented the memorials of babies who had died at an early age. Jack honed his math skills by calculating the ages of each of those who were buried here. When Morgan asked how many people had died here, Jack reminded her that they probably hadn't actually died HERE (unless there was a war on this site - unlikely). Interesting what insights lie just below the surface...
